Smuggler's Cove says "Black Blended Rum" for this. Most sources say a Demerera rum. The 1946 "Trader Vic's Book of Food and Drink" says 3oz of 86 proof Demerara rum, specifically calling out Lemon Hart. The 1972 "Trader Vic's Bartender's Guide" changes it up a bit, but still calls for Demerara rum - in this case it uses 1oz each of a light Puerto Rican rum, dark Jamaican rum (probably Myers' at the time), and 151 Demerara rum.
Smuggler's Cove has Demerara rums in both the Blended Aged and Black Blended categories, so any Demerara rum should serve well here. Since this site uses Minimalist Tiki categories, other than Black Blended, the recipe should possibly state Aged Demerara rum, but since this is the Smuggler's Cove recipe, I stuck with their category.
