Planter's Punch (Donn the Beachcomber, 1930s) Copy link image

Everyone has their own Planter's Punch variation, and since it's just a template, they vary wildly. America was most likely introduced to it by Don Beach's version. I have seen a couple of slight variations of this, which is unsurprising. They all use a 2oz blend of what Minimalist Tiki would call Moderately Aged Rum and Aged Jamaican Rum or a slightly wider range of Smuggler's Cove categories - Column Still Aged, Blended Lightly Aged, Blended Aged, and possibly Pot Still Lightly Aged or Black Blended. With that in mind, I'll list a couple here, but the actual recipe will list what I have found that I like.

[One source])https://www.islands.com/jamaica-planters-punch-don-beachcomber-circa-1930s/_ says "2 oz Dark Jamaican rum", which could mean anything from Appleton Estate Signature Select, which I don't consider "dark" but it is frequently used for that classification, to Coruba, Worthy Park 109, or Myers'.

Another, which I'd argue is more reputable as far as cocktail recipes goes (The Educated Barfly youtube cannel) call for the following. This looks more likely to be closer to the original based on recipes I am familiar with.:

Simple Syrup 1:1 12 Fl. Oz.
Grenadine 12 tsp
Falernum 12 tsp
