This is The Atomic Grog's 3rd version of this drink based on their research and visits.
This cocktail originally used Wray and Nephew Dagger and then Kohala Bay rums, neither of which are produced anymore. The Mai-Kai now uses Appleton Estate Signature blend but The Atomic Grog's research says that a 50/50 split of El Dorado 12 Year and Smith and Cross are a much closer match to the previous rums. Since those are my two favorite rums, this is is the way.
The Mariano's Mix #7 is 1 Tbsp Falernum to .25 Tsp Absinthe or Pernod.

Lightly Aged / Filtered Rum | 1 Fl. Oz. | A Puerto Rican rum such as Don Q Cristal |
Moderately Aged Rum | 1 Fl. Oz. | An aged Puerto Rican or Cuban style rum. Some Barbados rums such as Mount Gay Eclipse would also work. |
Aged Jamaican Rum | 1 Fl. Oz. | Smith and Cross |
Aged Demerara Rum | 1 Fl. Oz. | El Dorado 12 year |
Directions
The official way:
- Blend all ingredients with 1.5 to 2 cups of crushed ice
- Pour into a large snifter
The Mano Tiki TIa way:
- Fill a glass halfway with crushed ice
- Shake ingredients hard with more crushed ice. The hard shake is important to break up the ice and dilute the drink.
- Open pour into the glass and stir
