Missionary's Downfall
Recipes for this cocktail are all over the place with some using pineapple juice and others blended with pineapple chunks. The amount of pineapple juice varies from 3/4 oz to 2 oz as well. The chunks versus juice difference may be due to the Aku Aku, which is what the Missionary's Downfall later became. The most well known recipe using the Aku Aku name is from Smuggler's Cove which uses pineapple chunks. Moody Mixologist says that Missionary's Downfall was a Don the Beachcomber cocktail and used pineapple juice and was shaken with ice while Aku Aku was Trader Vic's version and used pineapple chunks and was blended.
I'm going with a shaken + pineapple juice version, because that's easier. I first made this for my wife who prefers a sweeter drink, so I went with a full 2oz of pineapple juice. Just for myself I may try cutting back on the pineapple juice and/or increasing to 2 oz of rum. I did take a cue from Smuggler's Cove's Aku Aku and used 2:1 demerara syrup rather than the more common honey syrup. That decision was mostly based on always having the demerara syrup on hand.
