La Guildive
Kill Devil or Kill Divill is an old term for rum. I have read that it has meant, over time, low quality alcohol and prior to that very strong alcohol.
From what I have been able to put together, Guildive is a French term from the English Kill Devil. I have not found anything which expands on that and clarifies it. This document sounds like no one is particularly clear on how this happened. Perhaps if I could read French I might be able to get more out of it.
